Ghost Light: A Spooky Display Font That Elevates Halloween Campaigns

A Real Campaign Moment: Designing a Halloween Teaser Graphic

It was late October, and I was putting together a Halloween-themed teaser for a client’s seasonal product drop. I needed a font that screamed “spooky fun” without being too on-the-nose. I remembered seeing Ghost Light in a font marketplace and decided to test it in a social media graphic. The result? Instant Halloween magic. The font’s exaggerated curves and playful ligatures gave the design a mysterious yet approachable feel, perfect for capturing attention in a crowded feed.

Ghost Light’s Personality: Spooky, But Not Serious

Ghost Light is a display font with a strong visual identity. It leans into the spooky aesthetic with its jagged edges, uneven baseline, and slightly stretched letterforms. It’s not a font for long paragraphs or body text—it’s made for headlines, callouts, and branding moments where you want the typography to do the talking. The font feels like a cross between a haunted house sign and a retro carnival poster. It’s mysterious, a little chaotic, and totally eye-catching.

How Ghost Light Performs in Real Campaigns

I used Ghost Light across multiple campaign assets: a YouTube thumbnail, a set of Instagram Stories, a Pinterest pin, and a landing page header. In each case, the font stood out visually without compromising message clarity. On the YouTube thumbnail, it helped the headline pop against a dark background. In Instagram Stories, it added a fun, seasonal flair to swipe-up prompts. On Pinterest, it made the pin feel more editorial and themed, which is key for seasonal boards.

Where it really shined was in short, high-impact text. “50% Off Halloween Treats” or “Limited Time Only” became instant focal points. The font has a natural hierarchy—it guides the viewer’s eye without needing extra design tricks. That’s gold when you’re designing for fast-scrolling feeds.

When Ghost Light Works Best (And When It Doesn’t)

This font is ideal for short headlines, logo-style text, and decorative titles. It supports a strong visual tone, especially around Halloween or in themed content. It’s not suited for long-form copy, small captions, or formal brand communication. I tried using it in a subheader on a landing page and found it lost legibility at smaller sizes, especially on mobile.

Ghost Light also doesn’t work well in situations where accessibility or clarity is critical. For example, I wouldn’t use it in an email subject line or a digital ad that needs to be understood in under two seconds. Its playful style is a strength—but only in the right context.

Readability Tips for Mobile and Thumbnail Design

When using Ghost Light on mobile or in thumbnails, I found a few best practices helped maintain readability:

These small adjustments helped maintain Ghost Light’s visual appeal without sacrificing legibility.

Font Pairing Made Easy

Ghost Light is a strong personality, so it needs a supporting cast that balances it out. I paired it with a clean sans serif like Montserrat or Lato for subheaders and body text. This contrast made the spooky font feel intentional rather than overwhelming.

For more editorial or luxury Halloween campaigns, I tested it with a serif font like Playfair Display. The result was a more elevated, curated look. If the campaign had a handwritten or personal tone, I used it with a script font like Pacifico or a brush script for a tagline.

Ghost Light also works well in a modern typography system where the font is reserved for branding moments—like logo design, packaging design, or web headers—while cleaner fonts handle the rest of the layout.

What to Check Before Using Ghost Light in Campaigns

Before using Ghost Light in any client or commercial project, I made sure to check the following:

These checks are essential when using any premium font in digital marketing, social media graphics, or brand identity systems.
